Celebrating 50 Years of Carrera

Unless this is your first time to Calibre 11, you’ll already know that 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the TAG Heuer Carrera. Fifty is no mean milestone and so we wanted to celebrate in the right way- by creating a dedicated 50 Years of Carrera website
You’ll find a review of each decade of the Carrera, which sets out the highs, and occasional lows of the Carrera, as the watch evolved from the simple 36mm model of 1963, all the way through to the latest 45mm Carrera 1887 Jack Heuer …

2013 TAG Heuer Geneva Show Wrap

It was a busy week in Geneva, with many people crowding in town for the SIHH show. Perhaps sensible, then, for TAG Heuer to decamp a little further from the centre and have their exhibition to celebrate 50 years of the Carrera in the less well-trodden Sécheron.
In fact, on arriving, we were wondering if we were in the right place at all. The area can’t seem to make up its mind whether it’s light industrial or residential and the approach to the event venue was very unimposing. Still, we hoped …

Live Photos: Carrera 1887 Blue Dial 41mm

For decades (TAG) Heuer, and pretty much every other watch house out there, offered a rather monochromatic range of dials. In the early years, enamel white reigned supreme, but was followed by the hegemony of black, silver/grey and white. And for good reason, these are colours (or, more specifically, tones) that aren’t subject to whims and the vagaries of fashion
Every now and again, when we were lucky, a copper, champagne or cream dial came along to break the mould a little, but the tones still ruled the roost. And then …

First Look: Carrera 1887 Ceramic 43mm

While the Bullhead Jack Heuer Carrera 1887 may have taken centre-stage at yesterday’s model launch, the most important new Carrera to be launched this year from a sales perspective is without question the TAG Heuer Carrera 1887 Ceramic bezel 43mm.
This is effectively an update to the popular Carrera Calibre 16 Day-Date 43mm, but unfortunately the loss of  the Date function has meant that the new model needs a new name (and one that could be confused with the Carrera 1887 43mm).
While at first the design appears little changed from the …

First Look: Carrera Carbon 1887 Concept

TAG Heuer have taken the look of the recently announced Carrera Jack Heuer 1887 Chronograph and added a touch of Formula 1 technology with the Geneva 2013 concept watch- the Carrera Carbon 1887. In addition to a newly designed dial, the main party trick of the concept watch is its case- which tips the scales at an amazing 19 grams.

Design
The Carbon Carrera uses the same Bullhead Chronograph design as the Mikrogirder and Jack Heuer Carrera 1887, but with an all-black carbon dial with applied silver Arabic numerals.
The stealth design is …

First Look: 2013 Carrera Jack Heuer 1887

TAG Heuer has kicked off its 2013 launches with this watch- the Jack Heuer Calibre 1887 Chronograph (Ref. CAR2C11). The watch combines the bullhead Chronograph layout of the sensational 2012 Mikrogirder and several key design elements of the 80th Birthday Jack Heuer Carrera.
At the heart of the new Carrera is a rotated Calibre 1887 movement that allows the watch to sport the classic 3-6-9 dial layout, unlike the standard Calibre 1887 which has a 12-6-9 architecture.
The new model is just the start of TAG Heuer’s celebration of the 50th anniversary …

2012 Year in Review

As another new year starts, it’s an opportune time to look back over what 2012 meant from a TAG Heuer perspective and to take a peek at what to expect in 2013. In 2012 Calibre 11 bought you 52 new stories from a range of expert writers, taking you behind the scenes at TAG Heuer and showing you the best of the 2012 models, as well as a few “blasts from the past”.
Of course, there were a number of new models and limited editions, but the perhaps the most intriguing …
