Thanks Fabrizio. Dave S raised the same issue with me on dates. I took the 1978 date from this article that Chuck hosted- although did not write: http://www.chronomaddox.com/nouvelle_lemania_5100.html
Chuck notes here that Omega were using the movement as the 1045 Calibre from 1973/4- so perhaps the date of 1978 is when it was made available to companies other than Omega? Not sure.
Given that I am totally out of my depth on anything related to Omega, I will take your and Dave's guidance on the 1973/4 date rather than the 1978.
Cheers

Dear David, thanks a lot for taking your time to detail the period of Heuer's time so neglected in other chronicles, and the source of so many beautiful watches.
One remark is that the L5100 must have been developed much earlier than 1978, as the Omega Speedmaster 176.0012 entered the market in 1974. It donned an Omega 1045 calibre which was the L5100 a bit embellished. Omega then went on to use this very movement till 1987, when the so-called 'Holy Grail' of Chuck's (the L5100 in a Moonwatch-styled case) was produced in a very limited run.
Again thanks for this magnificent work; now I'm looking forward to reading part 2.
Cheers.
