Today we can bring you the details of the 2018 Japan-only limited editions, a pair of in-house powered Carreras launched to mark the opening of a new boutique. The new duo come hot on the heels of last year’s fantastic Men’s Club edition Monaco and is the latest in the long line of special edition watches made solely for the Japanese market.
The watches were announced on 1 April at the unveiling of the new TAG Heuer boutique in Ginza, the first of TAG Heuer’s stores to feature the innovative “iTAG” Connected displays, developed in conjunction with Xavier Dietlin, a designer of watch display cases and supplier to much of the industry for the SIHH and Baselworld shows.
TAG Heuer iTAG Connected Display
The iTAG connected displays enables a customer to search for a particular model on the integrated iPad, which then displays all the information about that watch and then rotates the display until the selected watch appears. The sales representative in the store is then informed via their Connected watch that the customer would like to try on the watch.
And, as you might expect, the customer can then save their selection on their own mobile device. It’s an interesting idea, which goes beyond being simply a way of displaying the watches, because it allows the customer to try on a couple of watches, save those watches to their iPhone and then go and get a coffee to think things over before committing to a purchase, with all the details and prices of the watches they’ve tried on being saved to their phone.
The iTAG system is on its way to a boutique near you soon, with the Oxford Street boutique in London being the next in line for the new technology, followed closely by the Fifth Avenue Boutique in New York.
Carrera Heuer 01 Tokyo Edition- CAR201D
The first of the 2018 Japan watches is the Tokyo Edition Carrera Heuer 01, a 43mm Carrera with a steel case and titanium-carbide black coating. The watch features a full-black “stealth” look with black gold hands and hour-markers with dark grey lume. The inky black look is offset by the splashes of bright red- nothing unusual with the red hands or red rings around the top chronograph pusher and the centre case, but the masterpiece is the fire-red date wheel which gives the watch a fantastic, unique look. Yes, it is hard to read the date at a glance- note the white background on the dial behind the “8”, which is the displayed date- but we still love the design.
The watch comes standard on the usual rubber strap, which is the right choice for a sporty model such as this one.
The sapphire caseback has a printed red “Limited Edition Tokyo” logo, with matching red text on the movement’s rotor.
Price and Availability
The 2018 Carrera Heuer 01 Tokyo Edition is priced at ¥645,000 (approx. USD5,925 at the time of writing) with 100 pieces made. The watch can only be purchased from the TAG Heuer Ginza Boutique.
Carrera Heuer 02T Tourbillon Ginza Edition- CAR5A8S
While the Carrera Heuer 01 edition joins a family of “all-black” models, the Carrera Tourbillon Ginza Edition takes the other path with its iced-out white look. The starting point for the new watch is a 45mm titanium case, with the party-pieces being the white dial plate and white ceramic bezel. The white touches extend to the all-white handset and lume and the rubber grip on the crown, as well as the white leather alligator strap which sits on a rubber base.
The “dial” features two dramatic flashes of red- the 2 and 10 o’clock hour markers and the tourbillon bridge. There are also two-red rings on the chronograph pushers.
We love the bold touches on this Heuer 02. Iced out white watches fall heavily in the “love it or hate it” camp, but if you are looking for something different, you won’t see another TAG Heuer that looks like the Ginza edition. But if you’re going to go for this look, then you may as well go the whole way and use white ceramic lugs and centre case as well.
The watch has a sapphire caseback with a plain steel, rather than titanium carbide coated, rotor with red text. It’s a smart look consistent with the colour scheme used on the dial.
Price and Availability
The 2018 TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 02T Ginza Edition is priced at at ¥2,740,000, which is just over USD25,000. Included in the bespoke box is a second leather strap in contrasting black. Like the Carrera Heuer 01, the watch is only on sale at the new Ginza boutique with only 20 pieces made.
