First Look- 2020 TAG Heuer Japan Limited Edition Aquaracer and Carrera

Last Updated on November 1, 2020 by Calibre 11

If you love limited edition TAG Heuers, then the Land of the Rising Sun is the place for you, thanks to the annual drop of LE watches made available only for the Japanese market. Japan is one of TAG Heuer’s most important sales markets, with the popularity of the brand built in the late 1970s and early 1980s on the back of the 1000 and 2000 dive watch series.

For 2020 there are four watches in the Japan-only collection: two steel Aquaracers that continue the dive-theme LE series, and two Carrera Chronographs.

You can read our overviews of previous Japan limited editions here:

Aquaracer Calibre 5- Ref. WBD2117 and WBD1417

Over the years, TAG Heuer Japan has released a range of Aquaracers with locations of famous dive locations on the dial. This year the watches carry the “Amami Ōshima” name, which is the largest Island in the Nansei Islands. TAG Heuer is supporting the work of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in the Islands by donating part of the proceeds of each watch to the WWF.

The Men’s watch is a 41mm Calibre 5 automatic, with a sunburst blue dial and the silhouette of Amami Ōshima above the 6 o’clock index. At the back of the watch is a closed steel caseback, with the WWF logo and Panda replacing the usual diver helmet.

The watch features the standard Aquaracer steel hands, but with bespoke light blue details, including the tip of the triangle on the sweeping seconds hand.

The second model is a companion Aquaracer Lady model, with the same blue dial with light blue highlights. This watch uses a 27mm steel case with a quartz movement.

Japan loves a good Mother of Pearl dial, with several “MOP” limited edition TAG Heuers over the years. The 2020 model is the 41mm Calibre 16 Carrera, with a black Mother of Pearl dial.

The MOP dial is contrasted by the 3 black registers, giving the watch a dial that changes with the angle of the light. Turn the watch over and you’ll find a sapphire crystal showing the Calibre 16 movement and the engraved “Special Edition Japan” text.

Carrera Heuer 02T- Ref. CAR5A8D

The final Japan LE is a Carrera Heuer 02 Tourbillon, with a 45mm Titanium Grade 5 case and fixed bezel. The chronograph pushers and the caseback are also made from titanium, as is the folding deployant clasp.

Using the now-familiar “semi-skeleton” dial of the Heuer 02T family, the watch has an opaline black dial plate with Rhodium-plated indices. Each of the hour-markers features a beige/ yellow lume colour, which extends to the hour and minute hands and the tip of the central chronograph hand.

The movement features a Rose Gold- plated “160 Years of Avant Garde” rotor, the same design that offered on the Carrera Elegant series.

The watch comes with two straps- a black alligator leather strap overlaid on a rubber base, and a cool camouflage-style calfskin leather strap shown above.
