First Look: Carrera Heuer 02 Carbon Collection

Following on from the launch of the Monaco Bamford Carbon and the Aquaracer Carbon Collection comes the Carrera carbon collection, three chronographs powered by TAG Heuer’s in-house Heuer 02 movement. While we have seen a carbon version of the Heuer 02T in the past, the blue and red carbon watches are last-minute additions to TAG Heuer’s 2018 range and follows a rush of new releases for the year-end shopping season.

The roll-out of the Carrera Heuer 02 range has been slower than we expected- recall that the series was first announced back in January- but we are now starting to see the watches arrive in stores, with the Carbon Collection joining the Carrera Heuer 02 GMT. We expect to see the remainder of the Carrera Heuer 02 range in stores in the early part of 2019.

What’s New?

The new Carrera Carbon range consists of three models: two 43mm Heuer 02 chronographs and a 45mm Heuer 02T chronograph. At this stage we are yet to see the tourbillon variant of the Heuer 02 in the smaller modular Carrera case, but fingers crossed we’ll see the range expanded further in 2019.

Carrera Heuer 02 Carbon Collection

Carrera Carbon Blue- Ref. CBG2017

The Carbon Blue is based on a titanium-carbide coated steel case. The Carbon elements are the fixed carbon tachymeter bezel and the lugs.

The blue touches on the dial extend from the lacquered central chronograph hand and the 3 and 9 o’clock hands, while the hand on the 6 o’clock register remains in steel, instead featuring a bright blue register ring. Look closely and you’ll also see a small blue marker near each hour index.

Moving to the case, there is a blue ring on the base of the top chronograph pusher.

The rubber strap is the single strap option for the blue Heuer 02.

Carrera Carbon Red- Ref. CBG2052

Like it’s blue brother, the centre case of the Red Carbon model is titanium-carbide coated steel- but this time with 18k rose gold lugs.

There is also gold treatment on the dial, with the hour indices and hands being gold-plated.

Two of the hour counters are gold-plated, with the third an anthracite ring. Like the blue carbon Carrera, there is only a single rubber strap option.

Carrera Carbon Tourbillon Phantom- Ref.CAR5A8P

The last watch in the range is an extension of the 45mm Carrera Tourbillon series. This model features a titanium centre case, with carbon lugs and bezel.

The Carbon Phantom features silver rings at 3 and 9 o’clock and a PVD ring on the 6 o’clock register which houses the tourbillon. The Calibre Heuer 02T has been certified by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC), which is the second of the bodies that TAG Heuer uses to certify the precision of the Heuer 02T, the other being the Besançon Observatory which certifies the Tête de Vipère Carrera.

The Phantom Heuer 02T has a matte black leather strap with a rubber inner lining.
