Closely following the launch of the heritage themed Fragment Carrera a few days ago comes another vintage re-release, this time of the 1972 Heuer Autavia 1163V “Viceroy”. TAG Heuer has seen the success of the Siffert and Orange Boy re-editions and decided to up the ante with its own watch- the Autavia 1972 Re-edition.
Like the Siffert and Orange Boy, the Viceroy Re-edition takes the first generation Autavia case and teams it with a colour scheme only found on the later third generation “C-Case” series, creating a mash-up of historical Autavia influences.
But while the new Viceroy shares the same Heuer 02 movement as other Autavias, TAG Heuer has modified the calibre to a two-register design, losing the running seconds counter of other models. That one change really steps up the look of this Autavia making it stand out from the rest of its 3-register family and again highlighting the flexibility of the Heuer 02 movement.
We’ve updated our Ultimate Guide to the Autavia, where you can see all the special edition of the re-edition Autavia series.
The 1972 Re-edition shares the same 42mm stainless steel case as other Autavias, as well as the same aluminium bezel. The changes from the black-dial CBE2110 are:
- Red lacquered central chronograph hand
- New red-tipped and filled hands
- Addition of “Automatic Chronograph” text
- Red minute markers behind the applied indices
- New black leather strap (code FC8246)
- 2 register vs. 3 register
- Applied polished date window
Probably the only feature that we would change would be to swap out the hour bezel for the tachymeter bezel offered on the Orange Boy- otherwise, TAG Heuer has done an excellent job of blending the old and the new.
Up Close with the Viceroy Re-Edition
While these may not look like a long list of changes, the result is something quite different, thanks to the two register design, which further blurs the lines between the 3rd generation Autavia using the 2-register Calibre 11 movements and the earlier 3-register Valjoux 72 Autavias.
The Heuer 02 movement is now available in four variations:
- 3 register chronograph
- 2 register chronograph
- 2 register tourbillon
- 3 register GMT
The Original- Autavia 1163V Viceroy
The 1972 Autavia 1163V Calibre 12 was known as the “Viceroy Autavia”, as the model was sold for a special $88 price as a promotion with every carton of Viceroy cigarettes, saving over $100 on the list price- quite a discount in percentage terms.
The promotion was promoted by US team Parnelli Jones, whose race car was also sponsored by the R.J Reynolds brand. You can still find Viceroy cigarettes in some markets today, such as Russia. Poland the Middle East and Turkey. Sadly, there is no 50% off offer for the newest Autavia.
Price and Availability- Autavia 1972 Re-Edition CBE2118
At this stage the Autavia 1972 Re-edition is only available in the United States at a price of US$5,800. While we understood that initially the watch was to be a limited edition of 150, the watch is now designated as a “Special Edition”, which is likely to mean a larger production run.
We expect to see more limited run Autavias in 2019, in addition the expansion of the range, with Calibre 5 variants expected.
