TAG Heuer has today in Miami launched two new Manchester United Edition watches- a Carrera and a Formula 1. Even the most ardent Mancunian would agree that there aren’t too many places on earth more different than Manchester and Miami, but there is a logic behind the choice of venue given the United team are now on their US Tour as part of their preparation for the up-coming 2018/ 2019 English Premier League season.
This is the second set of Manchester United watches, with this year’s offerings featuring an anthracite and red colour scheme, on contrast to the black and red colours offered on the 2017 editions of the watches.
Manchester United Carrera Heuer 01- CAR201M
The Manchester United Edition Carrera uses the familiar Carrera Heuer 01 design template, this time in a 43mm steel case, with matching steel lugs and bezel.
The dial offers the “semi-skeleton” Carrera Drive Timer style design, with an anthracite “dial” and a double-digit minuterie scale in place of the usual hour markers, a design that has been part of the Carrera range since the first Calibre 360 models were launched in 2005. In place of the usual 9 o’clock register is the famous Manchester United logo.
The Carrera makes good use of red highlights- Man U’s primary colour- with a red 60-second flange, red sub-dial hand at 9 o’clock and red lume on the hour and minute hands.
Moving to the flip side of the watch, the Man U Carrera features a sapphire caseback with the Manchester United logo, the colour of which matches nicely with the black and red colour scheme used on the rotor and column-wheel of the in-house Calibre Heuer 01.
In contrast to the 2017 Manchester United Carrera (below left), the new watch opts for silver and grey tones and uses the full Manchester United Shield, rather than simply the “red devil” motif featured on the 2017 model.
The 2018 Manchester United Edition Carrera Heuer 01 is available exclusively with the perforated red rubber strap shown in these images.
Manchester United Formula 1- CAZ101M
The second new model is a Man U edition Formula 1 Chronograph, like its Carrera brother, a 43mm steel case.
Also like its brother, the Formula 1 offers an anthracite dial (a flat opaline finish rather than a starburst finish) with red highlights, again making good use of red lume on the hour-markers, hands and over-size “12”. The Manchester United logo features prominently at the 6 o’clock hour-counter.
The caseback also features the Manchester United logo, with the watch powered by a 1/ 10th second quartz chronograph movement.
Below for comparison purposes is the 2018 watch next to its 2017 predecessor, with the main difference being the colour scheme adopted and the more conventional choice of rubber strap.
Price and Availability
At time of launch, we don’t yet have details on pricing, but will update the post when the information becomes available. It’s also worth noting that the two watches are tagged as “Special Editions” rather than “Limited Editions”, meaning that the watches will not be individually numbered.
